CHAN is a registered FBO with the Corporate Affairs commission of Nigeria, CAC 1449 as an umbrella organization for the coordination of all Christian Health services in Nigeria.
CHAN was founded in 1973 by:
- The Catholic Bishop’s Conference of Nigeria (CBCN),
- The Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN), and
- The Northern Christian Medical Advisory Council of Nigeria (NCMAC).
-
CHAN is the oldest health NGO in Nigeria and has nearly 400 healthcare facilities as its member intuitions (MIs) that are run by 20 Church denominations involved in provision of wholistic health care services including collaboration and complementation of government efforts in health care provision. The MIs play a complementary role to the ministry of health at both Federal, State and Local government levels as the second largest provider of health services in the country and CHAN serves as a link between government, Development partners and CHAN member institutions.
CHAN provides support to its MIs through capacity building, coordination of activities, Drug supply through CHAN-MediPharm, lobbying and advocacy, public relations and translation of government policies into action in line with the teaching of the churches. CHAN thrives to Save the lives of mothers and new-born at birth and through-out the life continuum of care. We have a robust data base that support advocacy and decision making, a profile that is raised among different stakeholders and a programme where funding opportunities are diversified. We impact the following target groups:
- Women and children as the most vulnerable groups
- Health Staff
- Member institutions
- Religious leaders
- Communities
-
And we do this by:
- Conducting service availability mapping
- Baseline information from MIs on MNCH
- Supportive supervision and monitoring visits
- Capacity building and mentoring
- Peer participatory rapid Health Assessment and Action (PPRHAA)
- Exchange learning visits and sharing sessions
